Illustration Friday - Safari (with pocket closed)
Do you have your night-vision goggles and animal treats? No? Then it's time to put on your safari vest.
Don’t forget to look inside the animal treats pocket.
I came up with this idea pretty quickly but it took ages to get it done (about 6 hours between sketching, painting, cutting, and inking). It’s watercolour, acrylic ink, black micron pen (.005) on strathmore bristol. And of course, I didn’t get to it until today. So this was pretty rushed.
A fun accident was involved during the addition of night-vision googles. I decided I didn't like the idea of extra socks (really, are those needed on a safari) so I crossed it out and wrote "night-vision goggles" instead. I like the looked of the "error" so much that I kept it in the painting.
All the lettering is hand-inked with micron. I used some acrylic ink to add depth around the pockets. All the identification tabs are hand-lettered then cut out, then edged with black pencil, then glued down. Arrows are hand drawn although I was seriously tempted to do them digitally. After all that work I was afraid I was going to ruin the piece! Phew. And I’m submitting rather late to the website. Ah well. It was a good experience....now that I'm finished. I hope you enjoy this.
Happy Illustration Friday!
