after talking about this for well over two years, i got my second tattoo today: a celtic bird, based on a design from the book of kells. the red head and orangey neck symbolize the head and ruffle of a turkey vulture, a bird with which i've long felt a kinship. i designed the color scheme myself, inspired by the muted hues of illuminated manuscripts. i'm a bit overwhelmed (it's a little bigger than i expected, in order to keep the details). but i'm happy.
i keep looking at it, at the bird's face. it's as if he's just lighted here, looking at me, getting used to me. and i'm getting used to him. he looks a little sad, too, and i love that. like he knows where i come from, and he's willing to help me carry that for the rest of my life. in fact, now that i look at him, it's as if the knot in his mouth is a stray strand of grass, like he's building a nest.
he's here for good.
