Looking Back At 2014 – January
Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland
I decided I would look back through some of the images and experiences I was fortunate enough to catch during my year in 2014 and share one of my favourites from each month as we head towards 2015. Some you may have seen before and some you might not… but it’s just a short selection of what has been a great year
There had been a large solar flare a few days earlier that was forecast to sweep past Earth later that night, and since the cloud forecast was rubbish back home in N Wales and I was already halfway across the country in Nottingham with work, I decided I would just head as far North as I could and do my best to try and catch any Aurora that might happen if things happened to fall into place.
I headed for the Northumberland coast since by the time it would get dark I’d be around that far north anyway, rather than try and get higher into Scotland and potentially miss anything happening whilst in traffic or in a light-polluted area. I’d been in touch with Mike Ridley who’s one of the many talented photographers in the NE area (there’s a lot of them up that way!) to try and get some help finding a dark-sky site and some directions to head for, and we arranged to meet up at Dunstanburgh Castle on the coast. It can be a real pain arriving somewhere like that under darkness and trying to work out where you’re going without wasting too much time getting lost, and so I’m grateful to Mike for his help that night and I’m still waiting to return the favour when he gets down to Anglesey and Snowdonia sometime!
As it happened (and mostly down to media reporting the likelihood of a northern lights display) most of the NE coast seemed to be packed with photographers and sightseers all over the place, although the aurora was a no-show in the end… but I got to spend the evening grabbing some night shots of a stunning castle I’d not visited before, chatting and meeting a great bunch of guys from what is a really friendly scene up there, and letting the cold Atlantic wind that didn’t let up all night blow a few stresses away!
By 6am I was back home in N Wales and ready to start the day-job again at 9am, no rest for the wicked… Though since I was working under my notice I wasn’t bothered that I was half-asleep ;-)
Please take a look at the FB pages of a few of the guys I met that night and give them a like as they put out some great work!
