Coach Pat Head Summitt

I had the blessing growing up in Knoxville and watching this class lady coach from the sidelines most of my life. Her dedication, courage, perseverance and tenacity are hallmarks of her amazing career. If you played for her you know all too well the "Pat" stare. Boy, could she get the best out of players! I read a stat yesterday that 74 former players are now coaching. WOW!

I shot this with a new camera I received this week (Canon 1Dx) and a Zeiss 21mm Distagon ZE. For those that follow me know I've shot Nikon since the first day I joined flickr ( a long time ago). So you'll be surprised to know I'm now shooting Canon gear. Yikes! I never thought the day would come I would ever type those words. :)

I was at this location around 4:45 a.m. yesterday morning after very little sleep (2 hours). Yikes again! The first thing I noticed was how dark the statue of her really is. The sign lighting is great but the in-ground lights don't really light her the best and presented their own set of challenges.

Back home it took four software programs and a lengthy amount of time processing to get the exact look I wanted.

My main goal was to not take this HDR over the top but to squeeze out as much detail and color possible. Honestly, by itself the colors and lighting around the monument are very bland. I found that odd too considering the neon lights around her name add so much punch. I'm sure it looks great during the day but with a little better lighting it could look just as spectacular at night. And, considering it's right next to Thompson-Boling Arena a lot of fans would have a chance to enjoy it better at night on their walk to the arena.

Overall, I'm pleased with the end result. Keep in mind, this is not the final product that will go to print as some cloning work needs to be completed.

Hopefully, I'll have the opportunity to meet Pat again soon ( I was a young boy the first time) and give her a signed print (maybe I'll get one in return :) ) . My initial thoughts are to discuss an avenue for print sales through the university with proceeds going to her "We Back Pat" foundation.

Hope my fellow sport fans out there enjoyed this photograph. I just wanted to share this very special location and tribute to a world-wide legend. You can find out more about this legendary coach here:
