Coyote Buttes North is part of the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness and is home to magnificent sandstone formations, patterns, swirls, and lines.

While beating the summer heat along a shady wall, some clouds rolled in to fill the sky in the upper part of the frame. A perfect time to make this image.

With the unforgiving detail of the Nikon D800E's sensor, I have been trying a different approach for certain images. This is a blend of four exposures. Three for depth of field at different focus points and a fourth for dynamic range on the sky.

    Nikon D800E
    Nikkor 16-35mm @ 16mm
    1/4 sec @ f8, ISO 50 (focus points)
    1/50 sec for the sky

      This is dumb.
Why would anyone want such excessive resolution?

Those lines are awesome, Jim. Love your chosen POV to really exaggerate them and bring them to life.

Nice, Jim. I still remember the time I was lucky enough to win the lottery at the ranger station one morning and secure a permit for the Wave for the following day amidst a group of 30-40 other photogs. That was when I was still shooting 35mm. Wish I knew then what I know now. Gotta go back.

Yowsers on the colors! Love how the wall just dominates the view with just a touch of the peaks in the background.

unforgettable image! I am curious that how do you blend your four images because I do wish to make photo like yours (even 1%), clean and clear. Do you just simply use mask in PS? (sorry for a maybe silly question from a rookie...)
