My Dad Santa

This is my dad.

An actor and broadcaster, he frequently performed as Santa for charity events. (Pittsburghers who are old enough may also remember his Santa performances on Paul Shannon's "Adventure Time" TV show on channel 4.)

His incredible baritone voice made him the very best Santa ever, though of course, I'm biased.

During the holidays, he would frequently be hired by Pittsburgh's department stores to perform and record songs that would play outside the decorated store windows. My mom has most of these recordings; I've been gradually restoring them.

This is one example (1.6MB MP3 file). Please take a listen! And as you do, put yourself in the scene. It's the late-1940s in the post-war-bustling steel city of Pittsburgh. You've jumped off the trolley on Smithfield Street and wandered up to a department store window, where you see a sleepy mechanical Santa in bed as one of his elves tries to waken him.

My Santa passed away on December 23, 1973.
