1927 Graflex RB and Spirit at Saturday Market
Often people ask if I want an old camera they have found cleaning out a garage, or as they are getting rid of things they have no use for.
A few years ago a son was cleaning out his wife's family's garage and came across "an old camera". He called and asked if I wanted it, and when I asked what it was he said he didn't know, it was a black box camera. He works for FedEx so I thought the shipping would be reduced, and it was probably just a Kodak Brownie, but it seemed easiest just to say yes and have him send it.
I have always admired the work of J.H. Lartigue, Lewis Hine, and Dorothea Lange, and when I opened the box and saw what it was, I was stunned. It took about two years of cleaning and adjusting, but the Graflex has been a wonderful pleasure to use.
As I am now in my sixties and not moving as quickly in the street as I used to, I have found that carrying this camera has drawn people to me, which is fortunate as I my desire to chase subjects has passed.
