Works of Mercy
Three of the works of mercy are depicted: giving drink to the thirsty, visiting the prisoner and clothing the naked. (Matthew 25) This is a detail of a large romanesque icon of the Last Judgment painted in the second half of the 12th century for the oratory of St Gregory Nazianzen near Santa Maria in Campo Marzio. The work is credited to Giovanni and Niccolo and was commissioned by Benedictine nuns. The icon is in the collection of the Vatican Museums in Rome.
