American soldiers at the Ziggurat

American soldiers smile for the camera at the base of the Ziggurat in the ruined ancient city of Ur, south-western Iraq. At 4,100 years old it is believed to be the oldest building on earth. These men are cheerful despite having to be in Iraq for 12 months, with a high chance of doing another 12-month tour within just a year. At the time of writing over 2,600 American soldiers have died in Iraq, with the number of wounded estimated at over 17,000. August 2006.
