New Bay Bridge

I have promoted this 6 year old image to the top of my photo stream. I flew over the San Francisco Bay Bridge in October, 2007 in a small 2-seater plane. The completed bridge is finally opening this weekend, and the entire bridge has been closed down for 5 days to allow the construction crews to complete the connection and move all the traffic lanes. This is one of the biggest public works project in the history of our country. I hope I get to see it again from the air !


It's almost impossible to see the construction from the deck of the old parallel bridge, so we went out to Treasure Island in 2011 to see it from the ground:


The new eastern span of the Bay Bridge is being built parallel to the old bridge. Multi-billion dollar ~10 year project. A section of this bridge collapsed during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and was put back into service very quickly; however that was a painful reminder of how dependent the Bay Area is on our bridges.
