Summer flowers in Antwerp vogelmarkt (5 pictures)
The Vogelmarkt (Bird market) now simply plain market is held every Sunday of the year around the Theater plein and the Oudevaartplaats. It is the most popular tourist market in Antwerp. The market has its origins in the 16th century when it was acted on the Meir in poultry and sheep. In the year 1912 it moved to the Oudevaartplaats and the market was expanded to include other items such as flowers, clothes, shoes, leather goods, antiques and food. Pets such as dogs and cats were sold also but no longer, due to the intervention of the RSPCA. All kinds of birds such as chickens, ducks and parakeets are still traded on the Bird market.
