The MAS museum is located in the old docks area called het Eilandje. It was an almost a run down neighbourhood, a forgotten corner of Antwerp. In the 80 years were inhabited areas of the island is still coloured after revaluation area. And there were initiatives for indigenous people through government grants to renovate their neglected heritage. This has the further decline of the area but could not stop. From a certain point increased the interest of developers and investors. Gradually, this resulted in a turnaround, but it also meant the final step toward gentrification of this area.
Nowadays it is highly upgraded and have the urban picturesque, fun and the values of the "Island" with its old historic docks to know and appreciate. This district to renovate and upgrade to a major and tourist-oriented waterfront district, marina and accommodations. Previously, it was also cosy with its nightclubs. Many cafes were the entertainment in the harbour. Now some are demolished for modern apartment buildings like the coloured on this picture
Only the now demolished hangars and then Warehouse, were sometimes bleak when, but the nightlife is still buzzing with great intensity in this port area.
