The Oudezijds Achterburgwal, Amsterdam

The Oudezijds Achterburgwal is a street canal in the center of Amsterdam.

The bridge between the OZ Voorburgwal Old Street and Oude Hoogstraat is a clear dividing line between the noisy northern wall part and the quiet southern part.

The northern part is full of sex shops, prostitutes window, peepshows, brothels, coffee shops and pubs. The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum is located on the northern part of the OZ Achterburgwal. In the southern part are more buildings like the University of Amsterdam, as well the Inside Hospital and Oudemanhuispoort.

The OZ Achterburgwal was refurbished in 2006 by the city of Amsterdam. The municipality announced in December 2007 that the window prostitution in the Red Light will be drastically reduced.

The number of windows on the OZ Achterburgwal will be further reduced by properties to purchase. The OZ Achterburgwal side alleys is one of the few areas where window prostitution will not entirely disappear.
