At Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, numbers within each terminal's letter indicate the walking time. This is so simple and great.

i've seen that in atlanta, too. walking feels so good after a transatlantic flight!
i like the typography as well.. frutiger is my favorite font!

Yes, the typography there is great. I'll have to check out Frutiger.

sorry i have to make a small correction: when the text is black on yellow background the font used is not frutiger, but the specially designed "schiphol" font.

it is sligtly bolder to prevent yellow light to decrease the legibility of the text! for all other signs frutiger is used...great font and great wayfinding system!!

Simple and great! But 1 - 20 minutes! That is surely useless?

    8. imgBear 55 months ago | reply

      seriously. 1-20? Ha ha.

1-20 minutes makes sense if the closest D gate is right behind the sign. The furthest D gate will be as much as 20 minutes away. I've been to Schiphol and it's a very large airport (affectionately called "Schiphol City"), so the gates do stretch out over quite a distance.

About this particular part of the signage design I want to show another photo of the sign and the way the "walking distance text" is added.

In my opinion the "walking distance text" is very small to read when viewing this sign from a distance and when the "walking distance text" is close by to read you really have to turn your head upwards to read.
