Library Reading Lounge

Together with the non-profit Side Street Projects, we created a pilot program to teach architecture to kids at Irving Middle School in Los Angeles. The goal of the class was to transform the interior space of their old library into a place that attracted more students. The existing library was consisted of rows of long oak desks and uncomfortable, straight back chairs. In response to this rigid layout, the idea of a circular reading lounge emerged through a process of design and model building. The result is an intimate space within a space. A place where students want to come and read.
