The beautiful: Gamboa Rainforest Resort

My daughter has worked the past two summers in Gamboa Panama with her Grad School. Knowing that this was her last summer there she suggested we have one of our visits there.

I wasn't so sure about this trip or this location, the older I get the more cautious I am growing. I didn't start to feel comfortable about taking the trip until I got on board the plane. I ended up sitting next to the most elegant woman who was originally from Panama and was heading down to visit her grown up children and her grandchildren (she reminded me of my Mom*). I had developed a "New York" fear about getting from the airport to the Resort (mostly rainforest/jungle) my sometimes over active imagination thought someone could easily just do away with me and dump me in a jungle where I would never be found?! Ah! I wasn't told that this great fellow that picked me up has been picking up lots of the scientists that have studied and lived in Gamboa. The song "Lady from Ipanema" played on the radio in the van on the way through the pitch black night to the resort, it was like I had traveled back in time, really quite lovely...

The immediate landscaping after we left the airport was urban and scary to me but clearly not to the families/people traveling outside in the rain. There were so many high, locked, barbed wire fences everywhere, and trash on the streets and people waiting for buses, many without an umbrella just taking on the rain. The environment seemed unsafe to me but they looked like they felt safe.

Soon we came to a winding place in the road and little black hills dappled the landscape with tiny houses jetting up all over them and their lights twinkled like those black hills were enchanted. How I would have loved to have some time taking pictures of that!

There was construction going on in the front half of the Resort so it looked like a Manhattan street blocked by temporary construction. But the entrance had huge picture windows and it's elegance seeped out into the driveway as a stretch limousine slide around the circular drive...

I stepped inside and oh what a lobby, huge ceilings, beautiful furnishing, tropical flower arrangements, art metal carved banisters and a huge wall of glass facing the back, although the landscape beyond remained a black mystery until sunrise the next day.

I woke up very early, my daughter still asleep, and quietly pulled back the deck curtains not to wake her, I am sure I gasped with delight! There was a white crocheted hammock on the deck and beyond lay rolling lush green landscaping, capybara's munching in the lawns below, the Chagres River swept and wrapped around the back side of the Resort, and beyond the River was one of the most breathtaking scenes I had ever seen, there were blue rainforest mountains with clouds that hung so low they melted into mists. I stepped out onto the deck with camera in hand and heard the sound of monkeys yelling to each other in those mountains.*

Now I knew why my daughter summoned me to this amazing place!* The place was gorgeous, and visiting with her was marvelous, as was watching her in her life with her fellow Grad student scientists. It was perfect.*

This is the most marvelous vacation destination if rain-forests and nature beautiful is what you are seeking!!!!
