We stayed in Kolkata just 3 days between January 12th and January 16th. I was born in this city. It is 65 years since I last saw it and it was obvious that in those years it has changed a lot. It is an amazing city, surprising on so many levels, with the grand opulent buildings of the British Raj rubbing shoulders with the tarpaulin covered pavement hovels of the immigrants from Bangladesh. It is massively over-populated, extremely noisy, frenetic and filthy, but, as our guide said, 'All life is there'. It was a very rich and thought-provoking experience, which I would not have wanted to miss. And as elsewhere in India, the people are wonderfully thoughtful and kind.
