Alabama Projects, Paterson NJ
Paterson's Alexander Hamilton Public Housing Project, also known as the Alabama projects was built in the 1950s as a low income housing project, similar to those built in urban neighborhoods all across the country. Over the years, the buildings have deteriorated from neglect. The development has been affected by crime, drugs, vandalism and residents had begun to leave the development, which only worsened things. By 2007 it was two thirds empty.
In 2007 the Federal Government gave approval to demolish the Alexander Hamilton projects. The Paterson Housing Authority plans to create a diverse, mixed-income community on the Hamilton site.
