Ancient lake in Mission Creek Park, Kelowna, BC — iPad painting #3
I visited my parents in Kelowna, BC over Easter weekend. I abducted my father's iPad, after making him buy the Brushes app, and took it into Mission Creek Park to test drive the app in nature.
This was my 3rd painting on the iPad. I started with a layer of just black lines, to sketch in the proportions and composition of the landscape. Then I added 4 more layers of colour, one of them overlaying the black line sketch, but most of them under the black lines, to allow the energy to remain.
I like this approach more than my first painting because it reflects my style better.
I also did a sketch of this scene by hand into my sketchbook, and it looks very different from this. I was curious to see how I would render the same scene in these two very different media: the iPad vs. the pen on paper.
I definitely still prefer the feel of the pen on paper, the slight scratchiness as it moves over the paper texture, the fact that there is no "undo" possible, and the organic-looking linework that results.
Still, I am considering buying an iPad, mostly for the sketching capabilities. I can't say I enjoyed it a ton yet, it takes getting used to. But I recognize the potential and the ease.
