The cliffs at Etretat are home to a multitude of nesting gulls. And they were quite unhappy with the throngs of tourists who were invading their territory. This one's protest could be heard for quite a distance.
These cliffs were a favorite of Monet and other impressionists. After hiking the cliffs with well-kept paths, my admiration for these painters and their determination to paint en plein air increased immensely. I can't imagine carrying all the equipment they did when they made their own paths here.
