Theme Park Inception
Disney California Adventure
Despite it not really being a pier, Paradise Pier has ended up a pretty compelling draw. What interests me the most about the area is that its basically a theme park recreating an amusement park, which is basically theme park Inception.
It didn't really work at first, but over time it's becoming less "conceptual excuse to build a cheap amusement park" and more "romanticized, idealized, seaside amusement park of yesteryear". It's not perfect, but I think what Disney has done so far has proven the concept has merit. Creating an amusement park within a theme park, if done right, is exactly the type of post-modern conceptual exercise that may prove theme parks go beyond simple amusement. If done wrong, well, have fun at Chester & Hester's.
