The Hills They Call Painted

    Newer Older

The end of the second day on my Eastern Oregon tour I had scheduled to be at the Painted Hills for sunset. As we explored the rest of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument storm clouds blew in and it even rained a little while we were exploring Blue Basin. Needless to say, I didn't have high hopes for a good sunset at the Hills. But, we rushed through the other sights of the area so that we'd get there in time and boy I'm glad we did! A sliver of sky opened up to the west just before sunset and allowed plenty of luscious warm light to pour through.

If you've never been to the Painted Hills (and the rest of the John Day Fossil Beds NM), it's a must-see spot in Oregon.

The undulating sedimentary layers are remarkable. Love the scrub in the foreground - it adds depth to the image. The sun "spotlight" on the orange rock is spectacular.
