Jazz Mafia Symphony by Adam Theis:
The Shotgun Wedding Quintet,Realistic Orchestra and Lyrics Born to play SFJAZZ showcase at Palace of Fine Arts on April 18th
(2/25/09) - As if selling out The Independent weren't enough, Bay Area bandits The Shotgun Wedding Quintet will join Adam Theis’ Jazz Mafia, Realistic Orchestra and special guest Lyrics Born for a one-night-only, SFJAZZ showcase at the Palace of Fine Arts on Saturday, April 18th.
A creative force on the Bay Area music scene for more than a decade, visionary trombonist, bassist and bandleader Adam Theis has launched some of the region’s most innovative, and stylistically expansive large ensembles. Backing an astounding array of artists, from Zion-I to KRS One to Carlos Santana and Thomas Dolby, the Santa Rosa native’s Jazz Mafia Horns, Realistic Orchestra and Shotgun Wedding Quintet have developed reputations as San Francisco’s go-to “house” bands for intricate, organic hip hop and jazz arrangements. “Equal parts big band and boom-bap”, the latter’s “illicit blend” of intricate jazz with “down-and-dirty, working class hip hop” is a microcosm of Theis’ unique approach and will play an essential role in his most ambitious project to date, the SFJAZZ-commissioned suite “Beats, Bows and Brass”.
Supported by a generous, $50,000 grant from The Wallace Alexander Gerbode and William and Flora Hewlett Foundations, Theis composed, arranged and orchestrated the suite over the course of 2008, merging elements of modern jazz, hip hop and electronica with symphonic instrumentation and arrangement. For its April, 2009 premiere, the 60-piece ensemble will be drawn from the Jazz Mafia talent pool and will feature prominent Bay Area vocalists and instrumentalists, including Lyrics Born, Joe Bagale, Karyn Paige, Dublin, Chris Mcgee, Eric Crystal, Mike Olmos, Erik Jekabson, Evan Francis, Mads Tolling, Anthony Blea and many more. After a truncated family matinee at 3 pm, the evening show will kick off with a pre-concert talk at 7 pm, followed by the full symphony work at 8 and a second set of orchestral arrangements of works by Lyrics Born, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet, Realistic Orchestra and others, at 10.
Fans of art and pop music alike will not want to miss what’s sure to be a night of creative mayhem, courtesy of the finest musical talent the Bay Area has to offer.
(NB: The Jazz Mafia crew can also be caught every Tuesday night the Mission’s newest live jazz venue, The Redemption Lounge.)
Please consider this event for critic’s choice accolades.
