"Sleepin' on the job"
If this little, male, Ruby-Throated hummingbird is indeed sleeping, he is probably dreaming of piercing all other earthly life forms with his handy beak/sword. About the size of your thumb and weighing less than a U.S. nickel ( 3 or 4 grams ), these tiny birds will spend the entire day protecting THEIR flower or sugar feeder from all comers. Their spiraling dogfights are a pleasure to watch. The males sport an iridescent, ruby-colored gorget ( throat patch ) that appears black or dark grey in shade or shadows. The females lack the gorget and are slightly larger in size.
