The building is new, but it's built on the same location as an old church with an awesome history:

"When Laki erupted in 1783, local pastor Jón Steingrímsson kept a good diary of the events, describing the sulphur raining down, ash falling from the sky, and poisoned sheep. After months of terrible destruction, the lava began flowing into Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Jón then gathered his congregation to the church and delivered his infamous Eldmessa ("fire sermon"), in which he reproached the crowd for their sins and laziness. The penitent believers became even more believing when the creeping lava stopped right at the edge of the church and all were spared." p 232 Bradt Guide to Iceland
