Converging Verticals (Frank Gehry's 'The Fish')

Newer Older

Barcelona 2005

I cannot remember what this sea front structure is called - any ideas?

Frank Gehry - The Fish. Thanks to Toni Pamuk for identifying this amazing sculpture.

Barcelona 1989–92

The fish is a frequently recurring motif in Gehry's work, serving as inspiration and mascot. In the Olympic Village for the 1992 Games, a monumental fish sculpture functions as a landmark and anchors a retail complex designed by Gehry within a larger Skidmore, Owings & Merrill hotel development.

If I tilt my head 90 degrees counter clockwise I think it looks like a high heeled shoe.

We thought that it looked like one of those cardboard bottles guys are given in hospital, to wee into!

Thanks for your comments =) Since this fish is made of metal it has different colours depending on the time of day, so it can be tricky to photograph. Here the light is perfect and I really like the colours in this shot! I've tried that same angle, but only at night, so the light and colours were very different... I like it! =D

Thanks Marcel - I really enjoyed your Barcelona images. But then living there means you have a much better chance than me to go back :-) I was lucky here with the light, as I only saw it on two occasions during my visit.

Would defenitely suggest square crop, for one because it shows
better on Flickr, but also the building on the right is very disturbing
to the structure of the fish. If then you would make the photo :
"View on black" the skin of the fish would be really glowing and
becoming quite real. I think the artwork desirves it. . . !
