Ismenie, Nymph of Diana

Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney

Charles Landelle

(France 1821–1908)

Ismenie, Nymph of Diana 1878

oil on canvas

From the museum’s description:

Landelle’s picture would have seemed daring to the point of obscene in the Gallery’s early years. The academic artist was a pupil of Paul Delaroche and achieved huge success in Paris under the Second Empire. One of his popular orientalist subjects was also acquired by the Gallery at the same time (for £200), but had lost favour by the 1950s and was then sold (for under £15).
