Kriba and Kipenzi

Western lowland gorilla Kriba cradles her baby Kipenzi at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. The critically endangered gorilla was born to Kriba and father Kibabu on January 15.

Kipenzi is Swahili for "Precious One".

She was born as part of an international breeding program, and is a vital contribution to ensuring the future of the endangered species. It's believed there are only 90,000 western lowlands in the wild, with numbers dwindling with the destruction of their habitat and a trade of what is called bush-meat in Africa.
