The Obelisks of Piazza Santa Maria Novella

Florence, February 2012

The two obelisks, designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati in the 16th century and erected on this spot in 1608, marked the start and finish of the chariot races that took place on this square from 1563 onwards until late in the 19th century. The bronze tortoises on which they rest were made by Giambologna.
