At Malawi's Liwonde National Park, we went on a canoe safari. Although safari is something that has always appealed to me, I never really considered how incredible it could be.

Seeing animals on television and in movies, we never really consider the impact of seeing these creatures in real life, in their natural habitat. It is a feeling that stays with you for a long time.

On this particular day, we had canoed through a winding waterway, through weeds and marsh, and when we came to the opening of the lake, we passed by some hippos, and just getting to sit and watch them was an experience in itself.

This old man was our guide for the day, and knew his way through the park like the back of his hand.
