John Henry - Larger than Life (his story forgotten)
Was in Seattle getting pages added to my passport and have always loved this huge statue in front of the art museum. I wonder how many people passing by realize who John Henry was in folk lore? His story was the story of man against machine and one that reminds us of the ways that labor unions have helped protect workers against management folly and greed. In recent times teacher unions have been unfairly blamed for any of the challenges facing schools these days while poverty and social issues have been ignored. My wife, who is a teacher, was out on strike yesterday because the district tried to take away the time for parent conferences and leave them up to teachers to schedule on their own time. Money was not an issue. As of this Saturday morning, it looks like their strike was effective and school will open on Wednesday on schedule.
