The Sera Monestary Debate

Every afternoon between 3-5pm this courtyard at the centre of the Sera monestary comes alive with the shouting and clapping of the monks' debate. It's a brilliant space, but you can't help but feel incredibly intrusive. All the way around the edge of the courtyard is a path which is heaving with camera happy tourists and the odd Chinese soldier - the cynic in me couldn't help but wonder if a little bit of this fevered activity was embellished for the crowds to help raise money to rebuild the monastery?

It was also short listed in The Guardian's Been There December competition.
