Map of people with some amount of Scottish Gaelic 2011 Census

Shapefile for Detailed Characteristics Areas

Using data from the 3b Bulk Release

Relevant documents in 3b bulk zip are 'R3b Cell Reference Data.xls' ( worksheet DC2120SC ) in the root folder, 'DC2120SC_Bulk_Output.csv' in the DC Postcode Sector folder.

Map produced using QGIS 2.4 with a quantile color ramp.

Data munging ( joining csv to shapefile on the basis of SC code ) done with Python, Pandas and pyshp.

Equation the shading is based on is column DC2120SC0001 minus DC2120SC0008.

DC2120SC0001 - All people aged 3 and over

DC2120SC0008 - No skills in Gaelic

The detailed characteristics areas are quite large, but there doesn't appear to be any data on Scottish Gaelic for the smaller Local Output Areas, perhaps this is on the basis of anonymity.

The data should be adjusted as a percentage of the Detailed Characteristic Area population size and a cartogram of the Detailed Characteristic size would help to see how the urban areas compare nationally.
