    Sarusawa pond, Nara

I left Kyoto at around 11 and headed over to Nara, about 45 mins train ride away. Couldn't check in to my hostel until later that afternoon so dumped my bag there and wandered around the town. This pond was more or less at the entrance to all the main sights - Nara Park ("deer park"), the five-storey pagoda and the rest. I sat here and had some lunch, watching the many turtles in the water.

What a magical image of a grey heron (not a stork). It's called an
アオサギ in Japanese. Spectacular light, color, detail and composition!
Easy to see why it's your favorite shot of 2009!

The light on the water almost makes this look like a long exposure. Well captured.

Your fantastic color picture is my winner!
