Ladybirds Mating 6

Not my favourite shot of the series, it's mostly here to demonstrate the effect of the DIY softbox which I don't think really works here. The other 5 ladybird shots are done with bare flash, and although the shadows on this one are softened, the reflection of the softbox off the wing cases doesn't quite do it for me, and there was nothing I could do to improve the reflection whilst lighting the subject. Cubic ladybirds might have helped though!


Time to buy (or make) a ringflash, perhaps?


Technical details:


Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens and a full stack (68mm) of Kenko extension tubes. Aperture at f/16 to hold some depth of field and shutter speed of 1/40 to balance the strong sunlight with the flash. Flash is an SB800 with a DIY softbox, set to manual, full power and triggered by PC sync cord (this lighting setup)
