When I look at this photo, it makes me think of... summer, all the way

I think this photo is about... one flower in a field being quite similar to all the others, but when photographed like this, it becomes the case of an individual in a mass - singling out the single photograph like this works very well

Technically... I think you've hit the nail on the (flower-)head here: Your extremely shallow DOF is an asset to this photo (although alternative treatments would also have been possible, more about that below), and the background is dreamlike and beautiful. Well done

What I like about this photo... is that this flower obviously is part of a field, but stands out well among its brethren. It's a damn-near perfect daisy, which is a pretty rare find in itself, but the way it's photographed makes it look dreamlike and painterly.

Also, I positively love the colourfulness of this!

If I were to improve or change anything, I would... consider a slightly different crop - the flower smack-bang in the middle of the frame is a less interesting thing to me than if you'd gotten in closer and thrown it a little off to one side. The bottom of the photo is a bit 'noisy' with the darker greens, so perhaps if you had moved lower with the camera, you'd have had a chance to get even more flowers in the background, and tried a different composition as well?

I like the very shallow DOF, but I wonder if perhaps you may have gone a tiny bit too far on this one - I'd have loved it if the whole photo was perfectly in focus, but the same amount of fuzziness in the background. There are a few ways of achieving this (move further away and zoom in, or use a smaller aperture), but trial and error is the only way to get it perfect.

Overall... I think this is a pretty "standard" photo - most photographers will at some point experiment with flowers and shallow DOF - but you've done a very good job indeed of keeping it subtle, and the image comes across as very nice and balanced; the mark of a photographer who can tick a box and move on with a beautiful photograph in his portfolio.

Finally, if you fancy it, why not add this photo to the www.flickr.com/groups/critique-by-photocritic Flickr pool?

This is a Photocritic photo critique. If you want one, too, check out my photo critiques page. Also, why not make Flickr a better place for photographers by doing photo critiques yourself, too? Go on, you know you want to...
