Birch tree stubs like this one are remnants of a forest that was destroyed in a huge flood in the glacial river Markarfljót, that was caused by an eruption in Volcano Katla under the glacier Mýrdalsjökull. The eruption took place around year 800.This ancient forest is located in Fljótshlíð in southern Iceland. Mt. Þríhyrningur in the background. More images below.
