I felt really concerned when first spotting this homely little guy. He was very "adult bird" - a pretty good flyer, feeding himself, and seemed independent that I worried that his skin-face and punk doo was a serious health problem. Over the next few days I noticed a Grosbeak parental pair around (much better looking than their off-spring) and this little guy (at least I think it was the same bird) started to look like a real juvenile bird as some feathers returned.. Seems surprising to see such a "newly hatched" appearance outside of the nest. Bird experts out there - is this little guy okay?
