The remarkable Cattle Egret evolved on the plains of Africa where they followed grazing animals and fed on insects and small animals stirred up by the herd. With the spread of cattle raising, they also extended to North and South America and Australia. They were brought to Hawaii in the 1950s, ostensibly to control cattle pests and they have thrived there and are frequent around livestock and following mowing machines. They seem to really like golf courses too.
