Uncle Bill on the cover of 'War Pictorial' Magazine
He was at Dunkirk and then joined the tank regiment as a driver.
He was captured in North Africa, held prisoner in Piancenze, Italy for some time and then marched by the retreating Germans to Germany. This was called 'The Long March'.
His tank was hit head on by a shell and because he was the driver his head was split open down the middle of his face. The germans treated him very well apparantly, treating his wounds.
The germans forced his own crew to stand round his body to keep the sun off him as he lay in the desert.
