In 1988, IWMI undertook an innovative project involving 19 irrigation systems in Sindhupalchowk, in Nepal’s middle hills. Not only were farmers provided with know-how to boost water productivity and expand the irrigable area of their farms, the researchers also encouraged the farmers to manage the system themselves. This strategy was a ‘first’ in Nepal and community management continues to this day.
These pictures were taken in January 2013 to capture the change achieved 25 years after finalization of the project .
