Apples in RI, circa 1963.
These eight beautiful photographs were taken by my brother, a professional photographer, of some of our family members picking apples at a Rhode Island orchard, probably in October 1963. They possess a kind of quasi-painterly autumnal lyricism, and I have always loved them. Included in the photos is my mother, in mourning clothes after the death of my father. She and my sister, my brother-in-law, one nephew, and two nieces, all seem to be deriving great delight from the apple-grabbing.
