Marines Partner with Afghan Forces During Operation in Helmand Province

100616-M-1558F-231 Afghanistan National Army and Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment leadership meet with local elders in Southern Shorshork, Helmand province, Afghanistan, during Operation Cobra, June 16. As part of Lima Company's mission, they must set up an observation post in the area. The elders met with the military leadership to ask that they move out of the compound they selected, which was close to a graveyard where local women pray. After getting permission to stay for the night, the Marines and ANA moved to a new position further south. Operation Cobra is a joint operation between Marine Corps units and the Afghanistan National Army to disrupt enemy forces which have been using the sparsely populated region between Marjah and Nawa as a safe haven.
