KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (November 1) – A ceremony took place today at Kandahar Airfield to mark the transfer of authority of Regional Command (South) from Major-General Mart de Kruif to Major-General Nick Carter. With this transfer, leadership of RC (South) has passed from The Netherlands to the United Kingdom.

Major-General de Kruif assumed command of RC (South) on November 1, 2008. Major-General Carter, a 30-year veteran of the British Army, has had operational service in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

RC (South) is one of five regional ISAF commands. The formation consists of nearly 40 000 troops from 16 nations. It includes six provinces – Nimruz, Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan and Daykundi. RC (South) conducts security, reconstruction, and development operations jointly with Afghan National Security Forces in support of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
