Sacred Grove - morning sunlight

Morning sunlight through the trees in the Sacred Grove. An early May sunrise. This image belongs to the Sacred Grove / Smith Farm set. Click on image to view LARGER and on black.

The Sacred Grove is an LDS Church historical site in Western New York State near Palmyra, NY. This "Shady Woodland" was made sacred by the Prophet, Joseph Smith, and The First Vision.

It is extremely difficult to photograph in the grove when the sun is shining. The best light is on an overcast day, because the lower contrast and range of tones fall more easily within the range the camera can record. However, these softer light days are not as dramatic. Early morning and late afternoon photography is most dramatic, but the range of tones that your eye sees is far beyond what the camera can record without the use of HDR techniques -- however, in this case I only used the RAW image file to expand the the dynamic range.
