Fernando

Fernando Valenzuela made entirely out of the innards of a single baseball... A few weeks ago I posted on my website a wishlist of weird materials that I wanted for future projects, one of which was "a baseball that had actually been used in a game." Not long after, I received an email from Dan, who said he could get me some real baseballs. He generously sent me 5 real, major-league baseballs that were all dirty and stained with grass. PERFECT. Since I know nothing about baseball I asked if he had any suggestions for who I should make out of one of the balls, for a trial-run. Fernando was his pick and this is the result. In exchange for his generosity and enthusiasm, I am giving him this one. I hope to do some more soon... : )

amazing, defiantly one of my favorites of yours so far, cant wait to see some more of these, it would also be cool if the pose was someone who had just thrown, or hit, a ball, so the actual ball looked like it was flying at you(if that makes any sense, although i do love the tony baseball in his hand too)

I love your work anyway, but it's always exciting to see you branch out into new mediums!

Thanks so much! I am sorry for misspelling his name the first time around, but I've fixed it now : ) I definitely want to try some other poses, and I love the idea of doing one like the ball is coming at you. That's brilliant! Another version I want to try is to have a smaller player erupting out of the baseball, like a 3d sculpture coming out of the ball... We'll see. Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate the support!

Amazing. Never contemplated the innards of a baseball before.

NIce!! Still changing it up and keeping it fresh but sticking with this awesome technique. Love it! Keep up the good work / fun!

Thanks Matt! I had this idea about a year ago, but only got the baseballs recently, so it had plenty of time to simmer... I love the idea of the inside coming outside! Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!

making an image of a player out of his autographed baseball would be really cool.

Thanks! I would be open to making a portrait from a signed baseball, but I wouldn't want to destroy a collector's item... maybe if I copied a signature onto a ball?
