While in Cuba we went on a tour, part of which involved a dolphinarium. I believe dolphins should be free, so I was determined not to enjoy this part of the trip. But two things happened that made me part change my mind. Firstly, the position we were in beside the pool meant we could see behind. The girl in the photos was waiting, out of the sight of most of the audience. Suddenly the dolphin that wasn't performing at the time appeared. The genuine affection between the girl and the dolphin was spontanious and certainly not 'planned'.
Then, after we'd had a swim with the dolphins, I was the last person by the pool because I wanted to dry off before retrieving my camera. I looked in the pool to see if a dolphin was there to take a shot, when one appeared, looked at me and 'spoke' to me. It was almost like it was telling me to get ready with the camera. He (she?) then put on a show just for me. Clearly it was doing this just because it enjoyed showing off!
I still think dolphins should be free but I couldn't help but enjoy the experience and I came away feeling that the people at the dolphinarium treat the dolphins with both kindness & respect. I'd certainly go again.
