Sakena Yacoobi 2010-150
Sakena Yacoobi, an Afghani woman who set up underground schools to educate women during Taliban rule in Afghanistan, visited University of the Pacific in Stockton on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010. She spoke about the plight of women around the world as well as the political and cultural challenges in her native country. Yacoobi, a graduate of Pacific, still continues to work in Afghanistan despite having a death sentence passed against her by Taliban courts. She was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize several years ago for her work in the Middle East.
