Sólheimasandur. (The sands of Sólheimar)

Mt Katla and Mýrdalsjökull in the background.

After the small eruption in Eyjafjallajökull people are waiting to see what this old giant will do. Twenty eruptions have been documented between 930 and 1918, at intervals of 13–95 years. It has not erupted violently for 94 years, although there may have been small eruptions that did not break the ice cover, including ones in 1955 and 1999.

In thees eruptions water from the glaciers flood the low ground and flatten everything.
