I've always thought that KALW got out unusually well, in spite of its relatively low power, and subordinate geographical position relative to the Sutro Tower nearby. For example, it sounded better, at least to me, going down the coast around Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, than did the much closer and more elevated KQED/88.5, with 110kw ERP.
